Yacht Charter in Thailand

Oceana by Princess - Top rates for a Charter of a private Motor Yacht in Thailand

Thailand yacht charter

Thailand is the bustling sailing hub of Southeast Asia. Offering the most stunning, vast stretches of coastline and unparalleled tropical beauty, Thailand has become a sailing playground for superyachts from around the world. With year-round perfect sailing conditions, hundreds of smaller islands nearby to each other, the possibilities for yacht charters in Thailand are endless. There are two famous regions for yacht charters in Thailand: the southern Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Both offer spectacular natural scenery, peaceful sailing grounds, sheltered bays, and the most ideal weather perfect for cruising.

How much to charter a yacht in Thailand?

There is every imaginable type of yacht in Thailand for a yacht charter. Whether you are a couple in search for a romantic tropical getaway, or a group of friends wanting to enjoy endless parties on deck, or a family looking for the most memorable holiday in Thailand, there's a yacht perfect for your needs. A 40-foot, 3-cabin catamaran for two people on board can coast around $4,200 for seven nights, while a 47-foot sailing catamaran with four cabins can cost about $5,000 for a week's rent. Additionally, a 134-foot, 5-cabin motor yacht can cost around $120,000 for seven nights for ten people on board.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in Thailand?

Two regions in Thailand offer the most popular and most visited by yacht enthusiasts: the islands and coast of the Andaman and the Gulf of Thailand. Let's start with the more popular sailing ground, which is the Andaman Sea. Phuket is the jewel of the Andaman, and it's the most famous island in Thailand. Millions of tourists worldwide visit the island each year for its rich culture and history, and the breathtaking natural beauty surrounding the islands on the Andaman. Yacht charters in Phuket have plenty of options for itineraries, which include Phang Nga Bay, a World Heritage Site, and teeming with smaller islets made of limestone that seem to rise from the sea and into the sky.

With emerald green waters, pristine white beaches, and a plethora of secluded coves, bays, secret beaches, and caves, Phuket and its seas are genuinely a playground for water worshippers. Yacht charters can hop from one island to another in the archipelago of Ao Phang Nga National Park, with lush mangrove forests, limestone pinnacles, and hidden coves on the coast. Or they could head to the beautiful and famous Phi Phi Islands, with breathtaking views, powder white sand beaches, and all the shades of blue in its crystal clear waters. Other popular cruising spots include Krabi's islands, with over a hundred to explore, and the world-class dive spots of Similan and Surin Islands.

On the other side of Thailand, the Gulf of Thailand's coastal towns and islands offer a different atmosphere. More laid-back, rustic, and charming, the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Chang, and the Ang Thong National Park are the most famous cruising spots for yacht charters. Koh Samui is world-famous for its laid back atmosphere but also home to million-dollar villas and 5-start mega-resorts. It's the second most visited island in Thailand but offers a more family-friendly and romantic appeal than Phuket's crowded and tourist spots. Ang Thong National Park, a protected nature reserve, features 40 islands to explore, with each one being close to one another. Other notable cursing destinations in the Gulf of Thailand include Koh Tao and Koh Chang.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Thailand?

Being the sailing center of Southeast Asia, Thailand features luxury yacht charter destinations that offer a plethora of luxury yacht itineraries to choose from. Phuket is the top spot for luxury yacht charters in Thailand, with two world-class marinas: the Yacht Haven Marina, and the Ao Po Grand Marina, offering luxury services and hundreds of berths. Phuket also plays host to international regattas, such as the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, Asia's biggest and most popular regatta. The Phuket International Boat Show also happens once a year on the island, where some of the world's best superyachts are on show.

The seaside resort city of Pattaya is another luxury yacht destination in Thailand. Close to Bangkok, this city is a favorite weekend destination for locals, offering beaches and nearby islands to explore. It is also home to the Ocean Marina Yacht Club, another world-class marina in Thailand. Pattaya also plays host to The Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, another event in Thailand where superyachts from all over the world are showcased. While Koh Samui doesn't have a marina, the islands offer many safe anchorages for luxury yachts to drop anchor.

Koh Samui has become a favorite for luxury yacht charters because of its popularity with the rich and famous. Offering luxury villas, resorts, spas, and indulgent experiences, superyachts have made their way to Koh Samui and called it home during the country's dry season of November to April. Yacht charter in Thailand

An amazing combination of pristine nature, modern pace of life and best traditions of Buddhism is the cornerstone that attracts sailors to this country from all around the world. If you dream about unforgettable yacht charter, it should be in top of your list.

Located right in the heart of Southeast Asia, this country is surrounded by the Andaman Sea on the west side of the Malay Peninsula, and the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea on the east side. Until  1939 it was called Siam, which means "freedom.” Bordered by Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has kept its independence through the years. As a result, the  traditional lifestyle that has been intact for centuries has been left  almost unchanged. Well known for peace and calmness, the Thai people will make your sailing vacation even more pleasant.

Geographically, Thailand can be divided into 5 distinct regions, but  the southern peninsula of Malay and the eastern part of the country are of the most interest to sailors.

Thailand is washed with two oceans – Pacific on the eastern part and Indian in the western part, Thus while sailing, you may expect moderate breeze, clean tropical waters, number of safe moorings  and anchorages. You definitely will not find here number of equipped  marinas or harbors, but on every mooring or anchorage you will easily find some cozy local restaurant, water supply or grocery store. While Thai cuisine and the hospitality of locals will definitely bring only positive vibes.

Gulf of Thailand boat rentals

Eastern part of country covers several provinces including Trat, Chantburi and Rayong. On the southwest, it reaches the Gulf of Thailand, and it borders Cambodia to the east. The rugged coastline is bordered  with rocky islands and covered with lush green forest. While sailing, you will see many rivers flowing south to create large mangrove forests, followed by pristine white sand beaches. The east coast is very popular for its resort areas, but few sailors know about  the more secluded yacht charter opportunities in Koh Chang.

Sailing in Koh Chang

The Koh Chang yacht charter base is located only 194 miles (312  km) from Bangkok and offers excellent access to the mostly untouched cruising grounds. Being the second largest island in the country (after Phuket), a Koh Chang sailing vacation is a perfect combination of emerald waters, white sand beaches and pristine jungle, waterfalls and stunning lush landscapes. Koh Chang means “elephant” in the Thai language. A fitting name for an island that is shaped like a giant sleeping elephant.

Phuket yacht charter

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, and is located near the west coast in the Andaman Sea. The east coast of Phuket offers the finest cruising grounds, with easy access to 39 different islands. Discover towering pinnacles of limestone when sailing in the sheltered waters of Phang-nga Bay, set sails to see the famous Phi Phi located to the south of Andaman Sea, or the many beautiful locations in the province of Krabi. Make an offshore trip to one of the National Parks located in the Siliman, or Suring Islands, one of the most famous diving sites in the world.

The kind and hospitable people will make your sailing vacation and boat rentals in Phuket even more pleasant and memorable.

Best time for yachting in Thailand is from November to April. During this period, the weather is not too hot and there is quite a  small amount of precipitation. However, tropical climate and no typhoons make sailing in this region comfortable and safe all year round.

But even though, we recommend to choose the right time for travel. Favorable  conditions for navigation along the eastern and western coasts are from November to April. If you are looking for some extreme sailing conditions, you may go to the west coast from May to October, during the monsoon season. From November to April the weather is ideal for sailing both on the west and east coast of Thailand. From May to October – is the season of the southwestern monsoon. At this time, it is better to avoid the western waters but there are dozens of different sailing itineraries from the main yacht charter base located on the island of Phuket.

Sailing tips

Phuket is gaining growing popularity among sailors of different levels. It offers great coastline, quite simple navigation and a large choice of sailing itineraries of different duration. So, all this makes Phuket the best starting point for bareboat yacht charter.

This place is so popular that on top of three comfortable yacht marinas, two more were opened in the recent years. One of  the main advantages of Phuket sailing area is that gives you miles of emptiness and relaxing solitude free from big cruising ships.

Sailing grounds

There are two main directions of routes for yachts charter vacation – eastern and western. To the east of Phuket is the Phang-Nga Bay, where the famous Panuk and Hong islands are located. Also, you should pay attention to the James Bond Island, Krabi and Riley Beach, famous among rock climbers. The western shore of the island of Phuket is washed by the waters of the Andaman Sea, which is part of the Indian Ocean. The Similan and Surin are located 100 km northwest of Phuket and included in the top ten places on the planet for scuba  diving. Even further to the northwest are the Andaman Islands, known for their pristine natural beauty, incredible fishing and diving.

During your travel along the bay, you should definitely admire the network of amazing grottoes, caves and tunnels of Koh Panak. Landing from a yacht and having moved to a kayak, you can admire the hidden lagoons and mangrove forests that are in the center of the island.

In this direction is also the island of Krabi, famous for its snow-white beaches and emerald jungles.

During your sailing vacation, it’s worth visiting Phi Phi, a part of the marine national park. Here you will find closed lagoons, calcareous cliffs of striking height and much more.

A smaller Phi Phi Leh, was formed by limestone rocks. In this regard, the water around the island has acquired a unique turquoise hue. Although it is considered to be uninhabited, you can still find lots of interesting things to explore. Famous Viking cave with a picture of an ancient man, numerous swallow nests collected by locals as they considered to be kind of a delicacy.

Koh Hong considered to be one of the most fabulous islands in Krabi area. Here you may take your time and relax contemplating white sand beaches, hidden lagoons with shallow waters beaming with exotic fish. While on the anchorage take a kayak, and explore nearby caves. Up in the sky you will see sea eagles gliding in circles searching for prey while looking down you will find emerald bottom decorated with numerous starfish.

Bareboat charter will give you a chance to visit Koh Pannyi – a sheer rock, with a small fishing village near it built on wooden and concrete piles. Here, among mazes of huts you will find small colorful craft market as well as some bars and restaurants offering variety of fresh sea food dishes from the catch of the day.

It is hard to believe, but there is only one policeman in charge of the island, and couple of years ago there was even no electricity. An  interesting landmark is a football field built by schoolchildren directly on the water. There are no hotels, but you can spend the night on your boat or catamaran on a safe anchorage nearby.

Your next sailing destination is Koh Poda, covered with lush palm trees and surrounded by white beaches. A few meters from the beach there is a coral reef: here you can go snorkeling and admire the diversity of the underwater world.

The other island nearby is Koh Kai – a rock that looks like head and neck of a chicken. Part of it consists of steep rocks, and the opposite shore has beautiful sandy beaches. During strong tides this peninsula is partially flooded.

Phang Nga Bay will amaze you with its unusual, almost mystical beauty. A distinctive feature of this place are steep rocks, protruding vertically from emerald green water. The bay has the status of a marine National park.

Thailand offers great opportunity to combine yacht charter with diving. A lot of coral reefs, as well as a variety of underwater terrain provide unlimited opportunities for diving. Here you have a unique opportunity to meet whale sharks. The best period for diving is November-May. Visibility in water can reach up to 50 meters. Similan Islands are the most popular among divers. Phuket Island in the Andaman Sea is famous for deep-sea fishing and trolling. So, do not forget to rent a fishing kit and you’ll  have a great chance to catch tuna, barracuda, sailfish, marlin and other exotic fish.

Thai Cuisine

Thai cuisine is largely determined by the climate and culture of the country. Tropical vegetation and the proximity of the sea caused widespread use of various fruits, spices and seafood.

Also, migration and contacts with other peoples affected the ways of cooking. For example, the homeland of Thai tribes is mountain settlements in the southeast of China (modern provinces of Guangxi and  Guizhou). Between the 6th and 13th centuries these peoples migrated to the southern lands, where today Laos and Burma are located. Naturally, all this affected culinary preferences. Local  cuisine is a mixture of Chinese and Indian cuisine. Culinary traditions of these countries have had the greatest impact on the formation of local gastronomic predilections.

There are no strict cooking rules in Thai cuisine and taste of any dish depends not only on the set of products and spices, but also on the  personal style of the chef. Very important for Thai cuisine is the balance between food, spices and side dishes. For example, fried chicken with chili is combined with a soup of bitter melon with pork.

Rice in Thai cuisine is the most important product, it’s like bread  in Europe. And if the other dishes are served warm or at room temperature, the rice should be hot enough for you to see a steam.

The second main product is noodles: thin rice (kuaytiao sen lek), thick and nourishing (kuaytiao sen yai), yellow egg (bamee).

Thais eat little, but often. When serving the table, they do not use knives (all products are cut into small pieces). Finish eating usually with fruits. A favorite drink of Thai people is cold water (naam yen).

The main principle of local cuisine is to achieve a balance of five tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and poignant. Various ingredients are used for this purpose.

The two most characteristic of these are curry-based sauce and coconut milk. All kinds of sauces are considered a delicacy, their use depends on the type of dish or meat type. The most famous are kaeng massaman (includes cinnamon, peanuts and nutmeg); kaeng kheow waan (sweet and very hot sauce with greens); kaeng karee (served  with potatoes).

An important nuance of the culinary traditions is the aesthetics of the dish. Making a filigree decor of vegetables and fruits (carving) has become a kind of art here.

All Thai dishes can be divided into four categories:  quick-and well – fried or steamed dishes, as well as soups; spicy dishes – salads or fried dishes with different amounts of spices, often with  the addition of coconut milk; salads – vegetable mixed with meat, the taste can be sweet, and sour but always spicy; cooked vegetables – usually sour, although you can meet them with a sweetish flavor.

Culture & traditions

In Thailand, you will find a wealth of nature perfectly combined with  ancient history, culture and traditions. There are hundreds of islands, beaches, coves and capes. While planning your sailing vacations  Thanks to tropical climate, beaches with  pristine white sand, crystal clear waters, excellent coral reefs and wonderful palm trees. Add to this the friendliness of the Thai people, their magnificent culture and wonderful cuisine. No wonder in recent years it became one of the most popular sailing destinations in Asia.

This country has a long history. And during your sailing trip it may open some of its secrets. Over the long years of existence, the inhabitants of this country honor not only the monarch  and the state charter, but also Buddhist norms. That is why in almost  every part of the country you will meet small churches and chapels with centuries of history. There are a few tens of thousands of them all over the country.

Local people call their home a “land of freedom”, because “thai” means freedom, and it’s not just a coincidence. It is the only country in South-East Asia that has preserved its independence from European states, while all neighboring countries were once colonies of Great Britain or France. This helped to keep its intact beauty and uniqueness.

The main sailing area for yachting is the Andaman Sea, but if you want to get more acquainted with the historical monuments of the  country, then the best choice will be the Gulf of Thailand.

Fans of nightlife should go to Bangkok and Pattaya. Discos, go-go bars, nightclubs every evening are filled with people looking for entertainment. Loud music, bright neon lights, noise and talk of passers-by create a specific atmosphere here.

An important part of Thai culture is traditional music. The Thais also attach great importance to the theater. Modern art (cinema, music)  is very popular too.

An integral part of the way of life of the Thai people is the elephant. In the past, these animals were used in battles, transportation of trees, and today elephants mostly entertain tourists. The image of an elephant can be found even on the Thai flag. Worth  visiting is the island of elephants Koh Chang.

While sailing do not forget to visit at least one the 80 national parks and 32 nature reserves. Khao Yai National Park is the most visited park in country. For those who like to watch birds, it’s  worth going to Doi Suthep National Park, Doi Inthanon, or to Khao Sam  Roi Yot Park in the south. There is the last preserved rain forest in the Khao Yai National Park, which is one of the best parks in the world.

Asia Marine Motivated by Yachting in Amazing Thailand

  • November 14, 2019

A driving force behind Thailand Charter Week, Asia Marine CEO Vincent Tabuteau has been a pioneer of Phuket’s yachting industry since 1983.

asia yachting thailand

“At the time, there were no charter yachts,” Tabuteau recalls with a smile ahead of the first Thailand Charter Week. “Actually, there were only three hotels on the island and no decent boat to visit the Phi Phi Islands. Phang Nga Bay looked like ‘Peter Pan land’ with potential pirates.”

Fast forward 36 years and Phuket is arguably Southeast Asia’s most developed charter market and yachting destination, with Tabuteau and his company Asia Marine – which he founded in 1989 – among the companies to have led the way.

Hailing from the French sailing hub of Brittany, Tabuteau grew up on the water and has worked in the yachting industry for over four decades, the vast majority of that time in Thailand.

His enormous experience across many segments of the industry led to his current position as Vice President of the Thai Yachting Business Association (TYBA), the organising body of the inaugural Thailand Charter Week (November 16-21) at Phuket Yacht Haven. Asia Marine has a service centre at the large marina in the north of the island, although the company’s main office is in Boat Lagoon on the east coast.

Tabuteau has been a driving force behind the invitation-only six-day Thailand Charter Week, having attended the leading international charter shows in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, and been convinced that Southeast Asia deserved a similar annual even.

asia yachting thailand

Vincent Tabuteau, CEO of Asia Marine and VP of Thai Yachting Business Association

“We’re aiming to showcase the beauty of chartering in Asia to overseas agents, show them the product available, but most importantly demonstrate that Phuket is a premier charter destination,” said Tabuteau.

“For owners and operators, we’re holding talks about yachting standards, on how to collectively improve the charter industry here in Phuket so that it more closely matches how Europe works. It’s a chance for all parties to learn from one another, for mutual benefit.”

Tabuteau has long been a huge supporter and promoter of the yachting industry in Phuket, Thailand and Southeast Asia in general, but having been so heavily involved for so long, he’s also acutely aware of what needs to change and develop in order for it to realise more of its potential.

asia yachting thailand

“As a founding member of TYBA, Asia Marine has been working together with other yachting industry players to endeavour to meet European standards of operations. This includes gaining support from the [Thai] Government, adapting regulations to new activity, and providing better services to protect owners’ investments, passengers and operators.

“The next challenge for Thailand and the Andaman Sea will be the protection of the environment and the quality of the tourism experience. Our yachting industry is at risk of losing its magic if no drastic efforts are made for better management of popular beaches, mass tourism in coral areas and control of plastic pollution.”

PHUKET’S DECADES OF GROWTH

Tabuteau has seen first-hand how Phuket and its environment have changed with growing tourism and an increasing resident population – for better and for worse – having worked across a huge range of marine-related sectors during his time on the island.

Soon after his arrival in 1983, he became associated to a hotel cum tour operator and helped build the boats they wanted for day tours and excursions. The fleet included wooden sailing junks, teak barges and converted fishing boats.

asia yachting thailand

After Sunsail arrived in the early 1990s, Tabuteau ended up managing seven of the global charter company’s modern sailing boats.

“Sunsail and the phenomenal marketing campaigns of TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand), which created ‘Amazing Thailand’, really put Phuket on the map as an international cruising destination,” he recalls.

Boat Lagoon, the island’s first marina, opened in 1995 (as did Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Pattaya) and was followed in Phuket by Yacht Haven (1997), Royal Phuket Marina (2005) and Ao Po Grand Marina (2008).

Tabuteau says all the island’s marinas are full during the six-month high season and believes one of the key turning points was in 2004 when the Government dropped import taxes on yachts.

asia yachting thailand

“With bigger and better boats here, there has been a need
for more qualified crew and engineers, plus an increased supply of modern equipment and maintenance. Today, almost all global yacht builders, charter companies and brokerage houses have representation in Thailand, and I’d say the services for mid-range yachts is equivalent to Europe.”

RISE OF ASIA MARINE

One of Southeast Asia’s longest-established marine tourism companies, Asia Marine has grown in parallel with Phuket’s yachting industry and today has about 20 staff working across all of its operations.

While its main businesses remain in Phuket, the company also represents charter yachts operating all over Southeast Asia, from the Mergui Archipelago to the Anambas Islands and Komodo region.

Furthermore, since its partnership in 2017 with Eric Noyel’s Hong Kong-headquartered Asiamarine, Tabuteau and his team are part of
a network that also includes offices in the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.

“This gives us a larger reach to properly look after clients and represent them in Southeast Asia.”

asia yachting thailand

Asia Marine secured the Thailand dealership for French brand Bali in 2019 and has already sold a 4.1 sailing catamaran

Today, Tabuteau’s management team at Asia Marine in Thailand includes his wife Ratana as Director of Sales and Marketing, and Paul Stamp, who has worked as a yacht broker in Phuket for over a decade and is the company’s Operations Manager and Senior Broker.

Other key personnel include Base Manager Adam Taylor, who came from the diving industry, previously operating a dive centre in Koh Lanta, while Tabuteau’s son Ben has joined as Business Development Manager, having formerly worked at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.

The company operates across several sectors, primarily charter, new sales, brokerage, yacht services and boat management, and also marine insurance.

“Our mission is to help maintain and operate yachts for the benefit of the owners and their guests,” Tabuteau says.

asia yachting thailand

CHARTER AND SALES

Charter remains a core day-to-day business for Asia Marine, whose offerings include a fleet of sailing yachts, mainly catamarans, for bareboat charters, fast motor yachts for day charters, and crewed luxury yachts for overnight charters. For bareboat charters, most of the company’s clients are from Europe – France, Germany, UK, Russia – while Americans are another key market.

“We find that countries with a strong nautical tradition tend to want to pilot the yachts themselves,” Tabuteau says.

“Each of our types of charter yachts has its pros and cons, but together they create a wide range of choice. For day charter in Phuket, we have all nationalities, but in recent years there has been a lot of growth from the Indian, Chinese and Russian markets.”

Following the partnership with Asiamarine, Tabuteau and his team have been a dealer for global brands including Numarine (Turkey), Galeon (Poland) and Wellcraft (USA), while in 2019 the company was appointed the Thailand dealer for Bali Catamarans (France).

asia yachting thailand

In fact, because Asia Marine has expertise in almost all sectors of owning and operating a yacht in Thailand, the company likes to manage boats for any new owners and help them to find revenue streams.

“Our forte is to offer an ‘all-inclusive solution’ to owners. We have the technical expertise to manage their assets and a marketing network to find charter revenue. Because of our experience, we have in-depth knowledge of Thailand’s regulations and administration procedures, so we can ensure the smoothest experience for our yacht owners.”

FRASER, FAMILY AND FUTURE

However, Asia Marine did move into a new sector of the industry in February 2018 when Noyel’s partnership with Fraser across selected territories in Asia meant Tabuteau and his experienced team were representing an international superyacht brokerage house in Thailand for the first time.

asia yachting thailand

“As representatives of Fraser, we continue to ensure all yachts we represent meet the requirements for charter under the Fraser framework, which has pushed some owners to take extra measures in safety and compliance. Sales wise, catamarans are probably our most popular yachts, but selling one superyacht could drastically change the bottom line.”

It could be argued that Asia Marine has changed as much in
the last three years as it did in the previous 27, due in large to the partnership with Asiamarine, the extended network across Southeast Asia, plus representation of builders like Galeon, Bali, Numarine and Wellcraft, and now one of the world’s most famous brokerage houses.

Because of that, Tabuteau is hesitant to predict how the company might develop in the coming years, but is reassured that his family play a strong role in the business, with the presence of two generations of Tabuteaus in the company painting a bright future.

“I never envisioned where we are now, even five years ago, so who knows what will happen in the next three or five years. We’ll keep adapting and growing, but by then a younger team will probably be at the helm and I’ll be retired and fishing!”

And although he still frequently travels to Europe, whether visiting his family in Brittany each summer or meeting with business partners and agents, Tabuteau has no thoughts of returning to his motherland on a permanent basis. Phuket is still very much his home, as it has been since 1983.

“I have so many great memories since I’ve been here, both on and off the water. It’s all been an enjoyable experience the moment I arrived in Asia and I have no plans to leave. Thailand is and remains amazing.”

A Guide to Sailing in Thailand

Known for fusion cuisine and turqoise coastline, Thailand is home to many amazing sailing experiences around its islands

Thailand ’s yacht-charter scene sets sail from the county’s largest island: Phuket . Pinch yourself – because the topaz waters in the surrounding Phang Nga Bay stay warm all year round. The best news? Thailand has over 1,400 other islands scattered across miles and miles of ocean – and only a handful are inhabited. The rest are the domain of macaque monkeys and Andaman parakeets. Make one of them your home from home as you sail around Thailand and its many islands.

See other coastal charms around the world by booking one of Culture Trip’s multi-day sailing adventures .

What to See and Do in Thailand

Coral Island – a short sail south of Phuket – does what it says on the tin. Anchor offshore beyond the reef for snorkels with nudibranchs and lionfish. Seeking solitude? Coral Island hosts just one rather fancy resort – after day-trippers return to Phuket, the island’s three beaches are all yours.

Shop for far-out souvenirs in the warm night air at Phuket Old Town’s Chillva Night Market. The bazaar’s vibe is boho bling where you’ll find street eats, handmade jewellery, fried insects, silk textiles and cold beer, flogged from repurposed shipping containers.

The Best Mooring Locations in Thailand

A pool area in a luxury hotel in Phuket, Thailand

Royal Phuket Marina is by far the hottest yachting hub in Thailand. The harbour hosts restaurants, co-working spaces and regular regattas – plus scores of yachts from single-day explorers to 35m (114ft)-long superyachts. It’s little wonder the marina holds the prestigious 5 Gold Anchor Award from the Yacht Harbour Association. Need a mooring? Call VHF channel 79 or book one of the 100 berths online. As Phuket is the yacht-charter capital of Thailand, you’ll find dozens of tiny marinas, restaurant tie-up docks and yacht-friendly islets nearby – such as Ao Po Grand Marina, which leads directly onto the northern islands of Phang Nga Bay and the safe anchorage of Ao Chalong on Phuket’s southern tip.

Where to Eat and Drink in Thailand

A plate of Pad Thai noodles with seafood and nuts on the table in Thailand

Phuket sits at the cultural crossroads of Thailand. The island has welcomed Chinese, Malay, Portuguese and French influences – with each group imparting their recipes, too. Dishes are generally laden with seafood, pork and Thai spices. These include gaeng som , a sour tamarind curry with fish paste and o-aew , a thirst-quenching jelly dessert containing watermelon and shaved ice. Among the most polished addresses is seafood at the Trisara Resort. Expect a Michelin-rated medley of market-fresh amberjack paired with fresh greens from the restaurant’s organic garden – all elevated into time-honoured “Thai Mama” recipes. Rawai seafood market isn’t for the faint-hearted, however – point-and-order at thousands of bubbling aquarium tanks containing giant clams and tiger prawns. An adjoining restaurant will fry up your seafood purchase.

Where to Get Groceries in Thailand

Villa Market near Royal Phuket Marina is where yachties shop for at-sea essentials and cocktail treats. Every international bite – from Bertolli olive oil to Alpen muesli – is readily available from 9am to 9pm.

Key Annual Sailing Events in Thailand

The King’s Cup Regatta – which takes place in Phuket each December – is the most prestigious in all of South East Asia. Count on up to 100 big boats competing in a week of fast sailing around the southerly islands of Phuket. These include Koh Lon – a secluded beachy gem where swings dangle from coconut trees.

Climate and Weather in Thailand

Gentle tides, warm winds and a sandy seabed render Phuket as Thailand’s year-round cruising destination – where the dry season from November to April is best for novice sailors. Northeasterly winds promise dry spells and gentle breezes, although sunny days become scorching by April. More serious sailors select the wetter season from May to October. Southwesterly monsoons usher up to Force 6 winds, with rainy squalls followed by intense heat. That said, there’s always safe sailing in Phang Nga Bay down to the Phi Phi Islands.

How to Get to Thailand

An aeroplane flies over Phuket Airport over the Mai Khao Beach in Thailand

Phuket airport is the intercontinental hub for the yacht charter scene in Thailand – with direct flights from Melbourne, Moscow, Manchester and Mumbai. The airport approach highlights the allure as jets descend over an aquamarine sea, then land just past the golden sands of Mai Khao Beach. Marina and yacht charter options are within an easy 20-30 minute drive away.

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
